can anyone recommend basic inventory software with barcode scanning capabilities?
just software for a small to medium company that needs to keep track of stock coming in and out using barcode scanning to adjust the stock levels as necessary.

You can give inFlow Inventory a try. They have a Free version that is free forever, but limits to 100 products and customers. The software itself is very easy to use and fast to install.
I think they work nicely with barcode scanners too. They have a help article on that:
