How I can restore the old iPod software?

Recently I downloaded version 4.0 software for my iPod touch 2nd generation. I the new 3.0 software and the new I'm not allowed to touch the iPod to my stereo, which worked perfectly with the 3.0 software, but software 2 second generation. Any ideas?
