How do I improve my study skills?

I am going back to school after being out for the past 8 years and I am half way through my first class. We just had a mid-term last week and I bombed it horribly which made me realize just how poor my study skills are. Any suggestion on how to to get the most out of the time I am not in class.

1) Review the material BEFORE class. Even if you don’t understand it, the lecture will make more sense.
2)Take good notes during the lectures, and while reading the material.
3)Review your notes right after the lecture or reading, and copy them over so they will be easy to understand later.
4)This really helped me–Find a study place, get some kind of timer, get comfortable, and don’t think about ANYTHING except what you’re studying for a period of time–no I need to go to the bathroom, no I need something to during, no I need to call someone during this time. Start with a short period and work up to a couple hours.
